🐾 Meet Nelly 🐾

Nelly is a 6-year-old female English Bull Terrier, born on 10th January. She has been with her family since she was around 10 weeks old and is now looking for a new home due to a change in circumstances. We are hoping to find her a new family as soon as possible.

❤️ Nelly absolutely loves people. She is incredibly affectionate and loves nothing more than cuddling up with you — ideally sitting on your lap all day! She enjoys being with her people and would suit a home where she can have plenty of companionship.

👧 Nelly is very good with children and has lived happily around them. She is gentle enough that she won’t even take food from them. However, because of her size and excitable nature, we would not recommend placing her with babies or very young children.

🐶 Nelly’s relationship with other dogs is more complicated and will need careful management. She can become overstimulated during prolonged interactions with dogs and has nipped a couple of dogs in the past. The severity of these incidents is unknown, but the dogs were able to be separated and she did not lock on.

She has never been allowed off lead with other dogs and, importantly, Nelly does not cope well with small dogs. Her current family report that she can become very focused on them and has a high prey drive. For this reason, she will need to be an only dog and introductions to other dogs will need to be managed very carefully.

🐾 Nelly also has a very high prey drive towards small animals and is described as a definite “big no” around small furries. She will lock on when she sees small animals, so she must not be placed in a home with cats, rabbits or other small pets.

🎾 Nelly isn’t particularly interested in most toys, although she enjoys her treat toy! Footballs don’t tend to last long around her, and hosepipes and splashing water can make her extremely excited and focused, so these are best avoided.

🍽️ She is good around food. Nelly will happily watch you eat without pestering you and won’t take food unless it is given to her. She is currently fed a combination of wet and dry food.

🏡 At home, Nelly has access to the whole house and sleeps on her bed in the owner’s bedroom — although she may occasionally decide the end of the human bed is more comfortable! She is a real people-dog and likes to be where her family are.

She is currently being left from around 8am until 4:30pm, although a change in circumstances means she will need to become accustomed to being left even longer during the day, which is another reason for her rehoming. She is generally settled at home but can become restless if she hears a fox outside.

🎓 Nelly attended puppy classes and knows her basic cues, but she has no reliable recall. She is very focused on everything happening around her, so her attention can be difficult to maintain. She would benefit from an experienced owner continuing her training.

🚶‍♀️ Nelly isn’t a fan of long walks and currently tends to walk for around 15 minutes. Her new family should gradually build on this at her own pace rather than expecting her to suddenly become a long-distance walking companion.

🎈 Nelly really doesn’t cope well with balloons. She absolutely loves playing with them, but becomes very focused and determined to pop them. She also reacts to balloons being blown up and will immediately want to get hold of them.

🏥 One of Nelly’s biggest positives is that she is very good at the vets. She has had plenty of veterinary handling in the past, including when she had her puppies, and is comfortable being handled. She allows her ears to be checked, can be bathed and examined, and is generally very cooperative with handling. Her nails are currently done by someone she knows and she is fine with this.

Her vaccinations will need to be checked to confirm whether they are fully up to date.

🏡 What we’re looking for

Nelly needs a loving home with someone who understands English Bull Terriers and is prepared to manage her prey drive and reactions around other dogs.

She would be best suited to:

• ❤️ A home where she can receive plenty of love and companionship

• 🐕 An only-dog home

• 🚫 No cats or small furries

• 👧 A home with older, sensible children

• 🎓 An experienced owner committed to ongoing training

• 🐾 Someone who understands that her interactions with other dogs need careful management

• 🏡 A secure home where she cannot chase or access small animals

Nelly is a wonderfully affectionate girl who simply adores her people. She has lots of love to give and would thrive with an owner who appreciates her Bull Terrier personality, understands her limitations and is prepared to manage her carefully.

She isn’t looking for a home where she will be expected to mix freely with every dog she meets — she needs someone who will recognise what she can and can’t cope with and set her up for success.
