🐾 Meet Bruce 🐾

Bruce is a 5-year-old male English Bull Terrier, turning 6 on 3rd December. We are hoping to find him a new family as soon as possible.

Bruce is a big, affectionate character who absolutely loves people and cuddles. He is very excitable with adults and would quite happily climb onto your lap and push himself against you for attention! He is friendly with strangers too, happily allowing them to stroke him while wagging his tail.

👧 Bruce has lived happily with children, including an 8-year-old autistic child and a 14-year-old girl. His family describe him as being “good as gold” with the children.

🐶 Bruce can be boisterous around other dogs and doesn’t tend to play with them. On lead he can be quite “gobby”, but this is not considered aggressive. He has previously been pinned by another Mini Bull who tore his ear, and despite this he did not retaliate. He is not currently allowed off lead with other dogs, so any future introductions would need to be handled carefully and sensibly.

🐱 Bruce grew up with cats, although the cats in his current home don’t particularly tolerate him! He will show interest in cats he sees while out walking, and because his behaviour around unfamiliar cats is unknown, we would not recommend a home with cats or other small furries.

🎾 Bruce absolutely loves his ball and enjoys hard plastic and indestructible rubber toys. He has been taught to sit before his ball is thrown and also knows to sit and wait for his food. Despite loving food, he has no food aggression.

Bruce can be left for several hours and is described as very chilled at home, generally sleeping while his family are out. He sleeps in the kitchen on his own bed and has access to a crate, which he has had since puppyhood.

There are, however, some important things prospective adopters need to be aware of.

🏥 Bruce is very difficult at the vets. His vaccinations are not currently up to date because he becomes extremely stressed and difficult to handle there. He can be bathed at home, but his ears cannot currently be checked and his nails cannot be trimmed easily. He will therefore need an experienced owner who is prepared to work patiently on cooperative handling and veterinary visits.

Bruce has also previously required surgery on three occasions after eating things he shouldn’t — including a ham bone/solid chew, corn on the cob and part of a rubber toy. Thankfully, he has not had an incident requiring surgery for the last couple of years, but his tendency to eat inappropriate objects means that careful management will be essential.

🌿 Bruce has ongoing skin issues, which have been persistent rather than seasonal. He has tried various medications and injections without finding a solution that has completely resolved the problem. His new family will need to be prepared for this to require continued veterinary investigation and management.

🚶‍♂️ Bruce has a harness and Halti and walks better using these, although he can still pull. He has no reported reaction to traffic or bicycles.

🏡 What we’re looking for

Bruce would be best suited to experienced Bull Terrier owners who understand the breed and are prepared to continue his training, particularly around handling, walking and his tendency to eat things he shouldn’t.

He would need:

● 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 A home with older children

● 🐕 Careful management around other dogs

● 🚫 No small furries

● 🎓 An owner committed to ongoing training and handling work

● 🩺 Someone prepared to work patiently on his difficult vet visits and bring his vaccinations and routine healthcare up to date

● ❤️ A family who understands that Bruce is a big, boisterous, affectionate Bull Terrier with plenty of personality!

Bruce has no reported bite history and is a hugely loving boy who enjoys being close to his people. He will need the right home rather than simply any home, but for an experienced owner who is willing to put the work in, Bruce has lots of love, fun and companionship to give.
